Can canned Parmesan cheese be used in a recipe instead of fresh Parmesan?

Filed in Category Parmesan Cheese

I’ve never used fresh Parmesan cheese before and most recipes call for grated Parmesan cheese, can I use the powdery kind that comes in a cardboard container? I want to make Chicken Parmesan and it calls for grated Parmesan cheese.

Try to make sure it is 100% parmesan only, but you should be okay.

Absolutely use the fresh stuff. It is not anything close to the crap that comes in the can. We are talking night and day here.

Emsam, I suppose if that’s all you got, you can use it. Personally I don’t use that package muck, I like to grate my own or get the cheese and cold meet section do it for me when I get big quantity.

Yes, you can use it, but you will be sacrificing quality. The “REAL” thing is expensive though, and can be a bit salty. It’s okay to use either for that recipe. Just use some Mozzarella as well to make it extra cheesy.

it can, but the quality of your food would be taking a nosedive
