I cannot find a good American cheese in the supermarket. This is not an anti-American question but an expression of frustration. Are American cheeses processed differently than cheeses from other countries? Too much pasteurization? Not enough ageing? Bad shipping procedures? Why are they so bland and greasy?
I’d like some real cheese with my whine.

Because it’s made in bulk and put in a plastic package and served to the masses because no one really cares what it tastes like as long as it’s cheap and easy.
The Brits cultivate and care for their cheeses, as does the rest of Europe.
