Could Anyone Tell Me If It’s True That A Certain Italian Cheese Has Maggots In It?

Filed in Category Italian Cheeses

Re the cheese: If there is such a thing, how ever does it get past the food hygiene regulations, and don’t the maggots change into bluebottles at some point? Moreover, is it safe to eat it, and what does it taste like?

It was on C4 last night (14th) – “Would you eat an elephant”. Watch it on one of those ‘watch it again’ sites if you can.
It’s an Italian cheese which is normally just allowed to grow a mould, but if it ‘goes wrong’ they put it in a special cellar where they have some special small house-flies which are allowed to breed AND FEED on it. The resulting maggots transform the cheese into a completely different cheese which is then eaten – complete with the maggots, and it’s completely safe to eat because the maggots are entirely made of cheese anyway !
They aren’t allowed to SELL it but it CAN be produced and GIVEN AWAY.
My only problem is this: Would you want any ! ! !
Point of interest: The maggots are alive when you eat it !

oh yeah! sorry i have not tasted it but i saw it on this food programme once. yeah it has maggots in and is absolutely safe to eat, not sure why. i think they are specific maggots that don’t turn into bluebottles.all the chefs loved it though!

Yes, it’s illegal, it’s only sold on the black market and it’s so sharp that it literally sears your tongue. I’ll try to get you more info

no the maggot is already dead in cheese so will not do any harm for you, and it main used on pitza so it will be melted already. Do not eat maggot cheese in the block
