I need to know if the brick of cream cheese can be substituted for the spread in a recipe?

I am making cupcakes that calls for 8 oz. cream cheese spread,but I bought the brick,can it be used????

    I would say yes, whip it up first to get it areated and maybe add a little milk so it won’t be too thick and heavy.

    the brick is heavier, denser, not as whipped, so it won’t measure of blend the same as the spread

    Absolutely, you can substitute the brick type cream cheese, for the whipped. they are exactly the same, if you are measuring by weight. Let the brick soften a bit, before adding it, to the recipe, this will make it easier to incorporate in the recipe. The whipped, or spreadable type of cream cheese, just has more air in it, because it has been whipped. I prefer the brick type.

    Kraft (who makes Philadelphia Cream Cheese) says that the spreads are not for cooking and will give a different texture because they are whipped. However some people have substituted one for the other successfully in some recipes.
