Pregnancy Question: I Know They Say Soft Cheeses Are Bad, But What If They Are Pasteurized?

Filed in Category Soft Cheeses

They say that cheeses that are pasteurized are fine. But these days, all feta and goat cheeses that I buy say “pasteurized” on the package. So are those safe? You’d be hard pressed to find a soft cheese these days that doesn’t say pasteurized on it… can we really eat these safely while pregnant?

Most cheeses are pasteurized these days…as long as it says so, you should be fine. I am still staying away from any cheese where I can’t see the label however. For instance, I wouldn’t order it if a salad at a restaurant included something like feta or I would ask them to exclude the cheese. If I purchase it myself and know what I am eating though, I think its okay.

It sounds like that is okay but I’d be inclined to steer on the safe side and avoid soft cheeses. As well as the pasteurized/unpasteurized angle you also have to consider safe food handling to avoid bacterial infections. Soft cheeses tend to spend some time coming in and out of the fridge so may be an ideal home for these nasties.

you can only eat pasteurizes cheese. My nurse told me that if you eat any cheese that is not pasteurized , you can get and infection and so as the baby. SO ONLY EAT CHEESE THAT SAYS PASTEURIZED.
    Take your precautions.

I hope no cheeses are harmful. I’m 39 weeks pregnant and have been eating every kind of cheese out there! I haven’t had any problems otherwise!
