Sharp Old English Cheese?

Filed in Category English Cheeses

My grandmother had a mex recipe that calls for ‘Sharp Old English Cheese’. Years ago I found it – It comes in a red box like Velvetta but can’t find it anywhere anymore. I tried substituting just sharp cheese before and the recipe wasn’t near as good. What cheese can I use that will have the same taste?

Can you find Tillamook extra sharp cheddar? It’s got a partially black label. If you’re looking for a very sharp cheddar, that’s the best.

Kraft makes one by that name–it comes in a small jar.

    Hi,
I don’t recognise the box Iand I’m an elderly lady) but if I had to recommend a sharp English cheese on no other information I would suggest Lancashire first and Wensleydale second. Lancashire cooks well (I think Wensleydale does also) and if your memory is good enough and you can find a local deli that will let you taste slivers until you find one that rings memories that may help.
By the way, both these cheeses are essentially English; I mention this because you’ll sometimes see Cheddar-type cheeses (yellow in colour) described as sharp when the makers mean extra-strong. Hope this helps. Good luck with the search.
