What are vegan substitutes for the flavor of cheddar cheese and sour cream?

Filed in Category Cheddar Cheese

I’m moving more towards vegetarian cooking, but can’t seem to find a substitute for cheddar cheese and sour cream. Nachos just aren’t nachos without them.
How do you make strolganoff without sour cream?
Or burritos without cheese?

    Nothing!

Stop being a Vegan, its not healthy and very cruel to all those animals who died for nothing. Consume them so that their sacrifice had meaning.

Well there are substitutes for these sorts of things but they are very salty and often horrible…

You can get vegan faux cheddar cheese. I’ve tried Cheezly, but I didn’t like it, it has a cheddar taste but not very cheesy. I’ve heard good things about Daiya cheese, but it’s not available here in the UK.

I can’t find vegan sour cream in my area, so I just use soy plain yoghurt, it’s basically the same. You can also make your own.

the woman on youtube used vegan chili also..

miso paste is like cheddar cheese to me. I’ve always eaten it, even when I ate cheese, the texture of it just puts me off- it’s one solid waxy flavour from one end to the other, and I could never iignore what it what doing to my bodu inside- ie, just sitting there like a block of cheese.

Miso pasts tastes sharp and tangy, just like cheddar.
Sour cream, I wouldn’t kniow I never really ate that kind of stuff.
I’m not addicted to one thing like a certain dish that requires a certain ingredient like Stroganoff is.

Soychhese is alright, and miso paste is fine, but I’ve never been huge on cheese, so eating nachoes has always seemed like something other people do.

Can’t you eat something better instead? Or use silken tofu and lemon juice, miso paste and sugar.

Make nachos without a cheese equivalent – much better.

My favorite nachos are topped with:
    Guacamole
    Near East Spanish Rice Pilaf
    Black Olives
    Green and Red Bell Peppers
    Tomatoes
Vegan sour cream (you can get it pre-made but it’s easy to make)

For burritos, they are really good with potatos, rice and pico de gallo. Be creative and add whatever you want.

This is a good sour cream recipe:

    Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 10.5-ounce package of lite silken tofu(firm), crumbled
1 Tablespoon canola or olive oil
4 to 5 teaspoons lemon juice(fresh is best)
    2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
    1 teaspoon sweetener(any you want)
    1/2 teaspoon salt

    Directions:

Place all ingredients in a food processor(with metal blade) or blender. Process several minutes, until very creamy and smooth. Make sure you process it for a few minutes to ensure the creamy texture. Refrigerate. Serve over Mexican dishes and baked potatos. ONLY 2 GRAMS OF FAT! It stays fresh for approx. 5 days.

    Serves: 1 1/4 cups

    Preparation time: 5 minutes

Soy Cheese and Tofutti sour cream is great

A company called Road’s End has Chreese mixes, and I think one is a nacho cheese flavor. There’s also Daiya, as someone else mentioned, and they do have a cheddar flavor. I’ve had Daiya sandwiches, and they are WONDERFUL.

Now, for sour cream, Tofutti makes products for the lactose intolerant, some of which are accidentally vegan, and one is a sour cream. You can get that at many natural foods stores.

I’ve seen recipes for stroganoff without sour cream. Check out http://www.vegweb.com for all sorts of recipes.

I’m not a burrito person, but they’re just fine without cheese, I’m sure.

That is an excellent question – I hope someone answers this!
