What If The “soft” Cheeses Are Cooked In A Pasta Dish Or Sauce? Specifically Torellini, And Alfredo Sauce?

Filed in Category Soft Cheeses

My daughter is concerned about eating these because she is pregnant and soft cheeses are “no no’s”. I was wondering if they are boiled for 10 minutes in the pasta, or cooked in the sauce would that kill any potential bacteria?

    Anything cooked is fine.

Alfredo sauce is typically made with Parmesan cheese–which is a hard cheese and is safe during pregnancy. Also, it’s no longer the recommendation to avoid all soft cheeses, a pregnant woman should just read labels and be sure that any cheese or dairy product she consumes is made from pasturized milk.

As long as they are thoroughly cooked, she should be good to go. They mainly warn you to stay away from the uncooked/raw/unpasteurized cheeses due to the possibility of the presence of bacteria.

What kind of cheese are we talking about? It’s not necessarily ALL soft cheeses, and their biggest worry is cheese made from unpastuerized milk, which is illegal to do in many parts of the US.

Yes, it should be fine if it is cooked.
