What is the best English food I can give to a European?

Filed in Category English Cheeses

I’m visiting a friend in Switzerland. He is always making jokes about English cuisine, and about how wonderful Swiss chocolate, cheese, and bread is, so I would like to take him something typically English and special.

I have to be able to take this on the plane.

Any suggestions please.

Bring him better chocolate, better cheese, and better bread. And say HA.

Take a really nice home-made pie!

Try a steak and ale or maybe some sort of game (pheasant maybe).
It’s something you can either make yourself or pick up from somewhere local, though it would be nice making it yourself and its more personal. And if they don’t like it they can’t say its rubbish or it will hurt your feelings!

A small pie could be put in some sort of container for flight and shouldn’t be a problem as you can heat it up when you get there.

Also, for an added touch take some Hendersons Relish, gorgeous on pies and from good old Sheffield!

Really well-made, proper scones tend to go down really well! Other than that…seriously: English breakfast! Who can resist that ;)

A good novelty gift would be a copy of Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management (filled with traditional British recipes from Victorian times). They’re sold on Amazon.co.uk and probably in local book shops.

A good strong cheddar or blue stilton cheese would be my recommendation for food. I know decent cheddar is expensive and difficult to find in Scandinavia, not certain about Switzerland.

I would take a nice bottle of English wine as the Brits are making their marks in the wine world. Also, you guys are famous for fish and chips and spotted dick. All you can do is let them try your cuisine and they have to have an open mind to your culture. Exposure to other cultures open many doors and form lasting friendships.

Fish and chips. Or how about Baked Beans. Most of my Continental European Friends criticize how “awful” English Food is, but they all love Fish and Chips and Baked Beans.
