What Is The Best French Cheese To Bring To A Presentation?

Filed in Category French Cheeses

I’m in high school and am doing a presentation on French cheese and would like to bring some to share with the class. By the way I live in California and have never seen a cremerie in my town.
Where is the best store to get it?
Which cheese should I get because I know it is very expensive and I don’t have that much money to spend on it?
How many different types should I bring?
What else should I bring (crakers, or bread anything at all)?

There are several varieties of cheeses to consider, soft, semi soft, hard, goat’s milk, cow’s milk, blue…
If you can only get one, I would suggest you get one you think you’ll like.
One of the most common French cheeses is Brie…a very soft, mild cheese that is spread on crackers or bread (the french bread from the supermarket is fine) as is, sometimes served baked and warm, or en croute…meaning wrapped in dough and baked so a crust forms around it. It’s pretty easy to get Brie (pronounced BREE) in most supermarkets.
There is also Munster (or Munster Gerome) is also very easy to find in the supermarket (the American version is Muenster) either at the deli counter or in the pre-sliced cheese section. It’s from the Alsace region of France which has both French and German influence. It’s a stronger tasting cheese.
If you want a good stinky (and I do LOVE a good stinky cheese) Roquefort is the way to go. It’s a blue cheese (so if you want a bit of a fear factor…the blue in the cheese is an edible variety of mold). It pairs well with fruit like apples, pears and grapes.
There are literally hundreds of French cheeses (the French say a different cheese for every day of the year).
It’s a shame the Food Network show Have Fork Will Travel isn’t available on DVD yet…the host did a very funny segment on French cheese that would probably br great for your class.

Do you have a Whole Foods near you? They have a great collection of imported cheese in a special area of the store (not in the regular old dairy section). Go to the person behind the cheese counter and explain what you are doing and your budget. They’ll have some suggestions and might even give you some samples.

A loaf of French bread, and a log of chevre’…which is a smooth and creamy french goat cheese that is available at most grocery stores in the specialty foods section. Also, it is supposed to be served at room temperature (brie can be served at room temp. as well). Bring along a small jar of french marmalade, and you’ll be all set. Hope this helps.

Brie is a great cheese. Its inexpensive and its one that most people enjoy. It has a very mild taste and goes great with baguettes. I brought it in for my french class and everyone loved it. You can find it in Walmart :D
    Bonne Chance!
