Yes europe has a long history of aging their cheeses to perfection but you are also very wrong. WI, Vermont all have very good aged cheddars as well. Not all American cheeses are bland you just need to stop shopping in the general grocery stores and branch out to find a good cheese monger here stateside. Then and only then will you find a good strong American cheese.

Don't expect American cheese to taste like Cheddar. It is a completely different animal. When you get over the association (after all they are both the same color) you begin to see the 'other' possibilities for this different cheese.
It's good on a tuna melt, or a cheeseburger, or a grilled cheese. Give it a chance to be good enough 'just the way it is' lol :)
(I am assuming you're referring to the orange 'American cheese' in the individually wrapped slices?)

I am afraid you are miss informed. There are a lot of great cheese's made in America you need to find a store the sells it and be willing to pay for quality product. I would be happy to compare a well made 5 year old Wis. cheddar to any cheese produced any where in the world.
