Actually, its the fault of the Edwardians. At the turn of the 20th Century following the death of Queen Victoria, there were huge social changes in Britian leading up to WW1. Ladies were allowed more social freedoms than they had before, but in high society their behaviour was moderated by strict schooling in “finishing schools” which taught them that Ladies did not indulge in banter and conversation, but kept to two subjects: the weather and needlework. They were encouraged to discuss these subjects in several different languages – German, French, Italian (not too much Italian it is a very passionate language!) and little else. Is it any wonder Emilie Pankhurst broke ranks and called for Votes for Women?!

I don’t usually moan myself, but I am English. In fact, I like our weather. I couldn’t live somewhere where it’s just sun sun sun every day – it would be so boring! I am interested in the weather too (I was sad enough when younger to keep a weather diary for a couple of years), but if I lived somewhere warmer and sunnier there would be no weather to be interested in.
Yes I do like it more when the sun shines, and endless rain gets me down like anyone else (although I love a good thunderstorm), but I think the rain makes us appreciate the sun even more. It ensures we don’t just take it for granted.
I wouldn’t swap our climate for any other in the world.

I only moaned yesterday when it started to rain and cut our BBQ short! I did feel a little bit sorry for my 17 month old son though, it was a little too hot for him so he was cranky all day.

WE moan about the weather because it’s something to do, it good to have a moan about something, it relieves the stress for all this crap weather we’r having

It is silly isn’t it? Our weather is tame compared to places such as India, China etc… in their monsoon season who are receiving REAL flooding, and places near the equator where it is always hot & humid, or hurricane prone areas such as Florida, Philippines etc… A bit of rain and we complain and then a bit of heat and we complain too. I don’t complain personally and I don’t give a monkey’s if a patch of rain is coming towards us, the answer is simple, plan for the weather, and you won’t be caught out.

Who was moaning bout the couple of days of fine weather … The only moan I heard was that there wasn’t more of it … You can understand the moans at the rain and wind though .

Yes it cheeses me off too. The majority of people love the sun. What everyone who moans wants is a happy medium. They wanna go out and live in Spain and Cyprus where its 40 degrees then they will have something to moan about. And those moaning people have probably been on this planet for quite a few years and know the 4 seasons. We are having a crap summer no doubt about it. But i can’t stand people who say.. ‘oh its too hot oh its too cold…. just stop bloomin whinging people. If you havent got used to british weather by now u never will.

i know it gets on my nerves too, i love the sun, if its to hot get some shade or move to russia!!

i think its something people can agree on and it brings people together

I was in spain recently where it was 34 degrees every day…very hot, but a different heat to what we get in the Uk….most people I saw yesterday were enjoying the weather and getting blissfully red because of it……!!!
If you look at English weather, it is awful…most of the time is rains and we get one or two days of hot weather……when it gets hot in the UK, it get very muggy and we end up with thunder storms…then it rains again……….!!!

maybe in England, it humid and never could have the day-long bright sunshine like some countries near the equator.well ,I myself hate the weather there!

It’s really funny isn’t it. I think it’s cos we never have the opportunity to get too used to and prepared for it as it’s so changeable. I lived in US for a year and by the time I left in OCtober I was used to months of 40c temperatures, wore my jeans and didn’t care. Even though I love the sun if it was that hot tomorrow I would struggle as I just wouldn’t be used to it! Having said that I do make a concerted effort not to complain when it’s warm but just be prepared with suncream, shades and a hat as I burn easily!

  17. you know you love me

i complain a lot when it rains, but fir me, the hotter the better

  18. karen

ahhh your funny, we’re english its what we do, if we didnt have constant change though that would make for tooooo much moaning.
Here I’ll have a little gripe myself: Why has the sun gone down so soon, its not fair!
Go on have a go it comes so natural, its in our blood, you’ll feel better if you do!

  19. Knownow'

Thats what we do…..but it has been a crap summer….you go from rain rain rain to hot and humid…a nice warm summer day would be nice.

  20. omegaman

I’m english too! and yes we do moan with good reason I would say….given the fact we never have a good summer…nor do we have a nice crisp, sunny winter…that’s why I emigrated 20 years ago!!!.If you stay in the uk yourself you’ll have to put -up with the fact it’s not going to improve…skegness will never be like a greek island.nuff said.
